Melania Trump Hosts Russian and Ukrainian Officials at White House After Oleshky Ceasefire

First Lady Melania Trump brought Russian and Ukrainian officials to the White House on Thursday to mark a localized ceasefire she helped arrange in occupied southern Ukraine.

A White House gathering after Oleshky

On Thursday, Nov. 5, 2026, Melania Trump hosted representatives from Russia and Ukraine at the White House. The White House said the meeting is believed to be the first time a U.S. first lady has personally brought officials from two nations at war together there for diplomacy.

The event followed a short, localized ceasefire — a pause in fighting limited to one area — around Oleshky in Ukraine’s Kherson region. Russian forces occupy Oleshky. According to Ukraine’s human rights commissioner, Dmytro Lubinets, the pause ran from Oct. 27 through Nov. 1 and allowed aid deliveries and civilian evacuations.

In remarks released by the White House, Melania Trump said: “Now we must use the courage we brought to Oleshky to find common ground through a shared concern for the suffering of innocent people.” The White House also posted that line on X Thursday afternoon.

Who was there

Attendees included Kirill Dmitriev, a special envoy for Russian President Vladimir Putin; Yana Lantratova, Russia’s human rights commissioner; Lubinets; and Ukrainian lawmaker Davyd Arakhamia, a leader in President Volodymyr Zelensky’s party, according to the White House and BBC reporting ahead of the event.

AP reported that Dmitriev spoke at the gathering and thanked Melania Trump for her humanitarian role. AP also reported that President Donald Trump did not appear.

Ukrainian officials presented Melania Trump with the Order of Princess Olga, First Class, the White House said. BBC reported that Zelensky’s decree cited her humanitarian work, including help related to Ukrainian children affected by the war.

What Melania Trump says she did

The White House said Melania Trump acted as an “Exclusive Intermediary,” a role she said was written into agreements signed by Russia and Ukraine. She said she reviewed demining plans, roadways, evacuation routes and medical resources, and that nearly 800 people left the area during the operation.

Interfax-Ukraine quoted Lubinets saying both sides kept their commitments during the pause and that Kyiv and Moscow’s ombudsmen are exploring similar steps. BBC noted that earlier accounts also mentioned Vatican involvement in mediation alongside Melania Trump.

What this is — and is not

  • Oct. 23: White House says Russia and Ukraine signed ceasefire-related agreements.
  • Oct. 27–Nov. 1: Localized ceasefire around Oleshky; aid and evacuations, per Lubinets.
  • Nov. 5, ~11 a.m. ET: Melania Trump delivers White House remarks; FLOTUS and White House accounts post on X.

The pause did not end the wider Russia-Ukraine war. At the time of writing, a search of recent posts from major congressional leaders on both parties did not turn up a direct public response to Thursday’s White House event.
