Rep. Mike Lawler told CNN that the midterm climate in his New York district was so harsh that “Jesus Christ could have run and would have lost.”
What Lawler said
On Wednesday evening, Nov. 4, CNN’s Manu Raju recounted an interview with Rep. Mike Lawler, a New York Republican who lost his House seat. Lawler said he ran as strong a race as he could, but that “the bottom fell out” in a brutal environment for Republicans. Pressed further, Lawler told Raju: “Jesus Christ could have run and would have lost.”
Raju shared the quote on X the same evening, with video from the CNN segment. The post quickly circulated as Republicans argued over why the party lost Congress.
The race he lost
Lawler represented New York’s 17th District, covering parts of the lower Hudson Valley. Democrat Cait Conley, an Army veteran and former national security official, defeated him. CNN’s Decision Desk projected Conley’s win. Lawler’s district was one of three Republican-held House seats that Kamala Harris carried in 2024.
On Tuesday night, Lawler told supporters he had called Conley to concede. “When all of the votes are counted tomorrow in Westchester it’s going to be pretty clear we’re going to be short,” he said, according to CBS New York. He congratulated Conley and called serving in Congress the greatest honor of his life. Conley celebrated with supporters after the concession call.
A wider GOP blame game
Raju’s CNN report placed Lawler’s remark inside a broader Republican reckoning after Democrats flipped the House and Senate. According to Mediaite’s account of the segment:
- Rep. Greg Steube of Florida blamed leaders for “kneeling down to moderates” instead of holding firm.
- Rep. Marlin Stutzman of Indiana said “someone at the White House should be fired,” pointing to deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller.
- Other Republicans blamed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth or said the results were a referendum on President Trump.
Lawler framed his loss as a product of the district’s political climate, not a single campaign failure. Conley’s campaign did not immediately issue a public response to the “Jesus Christ” line; her earlier remarks focused on building a coalition of neighbors who share values even when they disagree on party.
What it shows
Lawler’s quote is one vivid example of how some defeated Republicans are describing Tuesday’s wave. Democrats cast their wins as a push on affordability and accountability. Republicans are still arguing among themselves over war, prices, and who should answer for the losses. Lawler’s seat will flip when Conley is seated in January, pending final certification of New York’s results.
